MIL-STD-1275E Power Supplies
Power supplies designed to meet the MIL-STD-1275E standard requirements are typically used in military ground vehicle power applications. They can also be useful to civilian manufacturers of off-road vehicles and heavy equipment who require high reliability in their products.
Military vehicles employ a nominal 28 V power supply system and much of this specification requires ensuring these systems are able to handle transient spikes and surges. The specifications in MIL-STD-1275E that power supplies must meet are:
- Transient spikes of up to ±250 V for 50 µs with durations no longer than 1 ms with maximum energy of 15 mJ
- Surges of 100V surge for 50 msec without degradation and continue to provide a regulated output
- Provide a regulated output down with a minimum of 20 volts input
- Provide rated power at 12 volts input for 1 second and at 16 volts input for 30 sec
In addition, ground vehicles are frequently deployed in dusty, humid, or sandy conditions and anticipating these environmental concerns is essential in the design of any power supply. Hardware must also be able to withstand the shock and vibration requirements for travel in rough terrain. Developing reliable power supplies considering these parameters presents various challenges that require precision-engineered solutions.
