Tammy K., Electronics Assembler, has been with ACT for three years. When she’s not soldering or making fellow employees laugh, she spends time on her farm. Read on to learn more about Tammy in our next Employee Spotlight.
ACT: Hi, Tammy—thank you for accepting the Employee Spotlight award! Have you always wanted to work in the electronics industry?
Tammy: Hi, thank you! No, but I’ve always worked with my hands. I was in the sewing industry to start. I sewed collars on long johns, made little girls’ clothes, and corsets. But times changed, and I found Amphenol. There I got into assembly and cable harnesses. Before ACT, I sandblasted glass at Crystal Imagery.
ACT: Well, we’re so happy you found your way to ACT! Tell us about what you do here. What’s it like being an Electronic Assembler?
Tammy: I build things for the military, which is pretty exciting. It’s hard to explain to people exactly what it’s like, but I’ve built PCBs and assembled whole power supplies. I enjoy soldering—I find it relaxing—and I like building things and taking them apart.
ACT: It’s good to like what you do. Is every day different, or is it more routine?
Tammy: I solder every day, but the tasks vary. Overall, every day is different. There’s something new to build or take apart.
ACT: Tell us, what is one of your favorite things about your job?
Tammy: Soldering and the people. I enjoy working with people and encouraging them.
ACT: On the flip side, what can be challenging?
Tammy: Doing rework can be challenging. It can be difficult trying to figure out how to take something apart to get the piece that you want.
ACT: What about ACT made you want to work here?
Tammy: Electronics. It’s what I know. It’s a love/hate relationship, ha. I love assembly and putting things together, but if something is wrong, it can be hard to figure out what’s not working right away. It’s trial and error.
ACT: We can understand that. Are there any company values that resonate with you?
Tammy: All of them. I’m amazed by the things we build and how our team comes up with it. I don’t know the ins and outs of all the parts—I just build it—but the brains and innovation behind it impress me.
If I had to choose one brand value though, I’d say quality. It’s personal. I take pride in my work.
ACT: Quality is a good one to choose! What are your career goals?
Tammy: Retirement. Haha. I plan on retiring from ACT.
ACT: What does it mean to you to be an employee-owner?
Tammy: It’s empowering and gives me a sense of pride. I’m proud that I’m an employee-owner and that my work contributes to the legacy of ACT.
ACT: We agree. Do you have any advice for new employees?
Tammy: The work is challenging, but the environment is good and helpful.
ACT: Great advice! When you’re not working, what are you doing?
Tammy: Feeding cats. I have too many! I live on a farm and make friends with them all. It’s how I decompress. In addition to the cats, we have a dog, two goats, chickens, and a horse that we’re boarding.
