About MIL-STD-1399 Section 300

MIL-STD-1399 Section 300 sets out standards for the use of AC power on military shipboard environments. For military vessels, it serves as an important set of best practices for engineers and project managers. MIL-STD-1399 outlines three types of low voltage power supplies that are acceptable for shipboard use:

  • Type I: 440 or 115 V, 60 Hz ungrounded. Type I is the most common type of shipboard power supply, used in most applications.
  • Type II: 440 or 115 V, 400 Hz ungrounded. Type II is used only in limited applications and must be authorized by a special deviation request.
  • Type III: 440 or 115 V, 400 Hz ungrounded. Also limited to restricted use, Type III shipboard power supplies have stricter requirements for acceptable levels of frequency transience and total harmonic distortion (THD).

Shipboard Power Supplies and THD

One of the most important requirements of any type of shipboard power supply is the need to keep total harmonic distortion to an acceptable level. With today’s naval platforms utilizing more and more sophisticated electronics, shipboard sources of prime AC power are required to handle greater loads than ever before. This can cause large current pulses which increase distortion levels and interfere with other system components.

At the moment, there are two accepted topologies for managing interference and THD in shipboard power supplies:

  • active power factor correction (PFC)
  • the use of polyphase transformers combined with tuned LC filters

At ACT, our manufacturing capabilities include both devices, though we recommend the use of PFC power supplies in shipboard environment. For a detailed discussion of why, please see the following article.
