Shipboard Power Supplies ACT has designed and manufactured many custom AC-DC power supplies for Navy shipboard applications. These power supplies are installed on a range of vessels including surface ships, submarines, Navy aircraft, along with Navy land based installations. The primary input power specification for Navy applications is MIL-STD-1399, Section 300A, Alternating Current and ACT can developed power supplies to all revisions of this specification. One of the primary specification requirements that has a significant impact on the power supply design is the need to meet the harmonic distortion requirements of MIL-STD-1399. There are two basic topologies used to meet the harmonic distortion requirements; one is using polyphase transformers combined with tuned LC filters, the second and recommended approach is the use of active power factor correction (PFC). ACT has used both design approaches to achieve the required harmonic distortion as illustrated in the examples below.
